A Day in Austria

While we were staying in Berchtesgaden, we were actually only a few minutes away from the Austrian border. Since Austria has so much of its own beauty to offer, we decided to take one of our days and see as much as we could of Germany's neighboring country. We started with Salzburg, which Rachel had been to twice before, and was the first time for Devin and our friends Sarah and Andrew.

Unfortunately, the weather in the morning was spitting and chilly, so we saw the main sites of old town Salzburg and then continued to a destination that was at the top of our "must-see" list, Hallstatt. Hallstatt popped up on our radar last year, and we almost went while we were in Vienna last summer, but it was a bit too far of a drive. The anticipation made it even more worth it when we finally got to see it. This storybook town nestled into the mountains and set on a lake quickly became everyone's favorite Austrian village. The weather remained pretty rainy and overcast while we were there, but it didn't stop us from noticing all of the adorable touches to the homes that make this town so very picturesque. We also indulged in some Apfelstrudel while watching the rain fall on the lake. We had no complaints whatsoever!

We stopped for a cafe at this overlook in St. Gilgen
Hallstatt. If only pictures did it justice!

We loved our quick day in Austria seeing such beautiful lakes, fields, and landscapes. Although this part of Austria is so close to Germany, it does have its unique differences. Overall, it fits right into the Bavarian architecture and culture that we love!
